Not since the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera
House or the London Eye has a new tall structure attracted such
attention. Elegant, sculptural and awe-inspiring, the Spinnaker Tower is
a new national icon. Soaring 170 metres (557 feet) into the sky above the historic harbour of Portsmouth, gateway to the English Channel, the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth's newest attraction is now open to view and the views are outstanding. The sensation is amazing. Glide to the top in style in the panoramic lift (the Panoramic lift is not being operated at present) Or take the high speed internal lift. Step out onto View Deck 1 and you step right into the best view in the country. On a clear day you can see for 23 miles or more. Dare you "Walk on Air"? See if you dare cross the glass floor, the largest in Europe. On View Deck 2 see the modern view or watch history unfold on the unique Time Telescopes, where you can watch the Mary Rose or H.M.S. Victory sailing by. Feel the wind in your hair on the "Crow's Nest". On the top deck, you are exposed to the elements. |

Alnwick Castle The Estate Offices Alnwick Northumberland NE66 1NQ 01665 510777 01665 511100 (24 Hour Information) http://www.alnwickcastle.com/ |
To many people, their first sight of this
glorious medieval castle can seem foreboding, and certainly its history
lacks nothing in drama and intrigue. Some of you may recognise it as a
film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket
to Blackadder. But today Alnwick Castle is very much a living
castle, at the heart of thriving estates and businesses; and is still
the home of the Percys, Earls and
Dukes of Northumberland which it has been since 1309. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle. The Castle was first restored by the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick in the early 1300's and portions of this restoration remain today, including the Abbot's Tower, the Middle Gateway and the Constable's Tower. |

The leading museum of historic
buildings in England. Designated by the Government for its
outstanding collections of national importance.
Winner of the Museum
of the Year, Community Museum of the Year and national awards for
interpretation and education. Set in 50 acres of beautiful Sussex countryside is a very special place to wander amongst a fascinating collection of nearly 50 historic buildings dating from the 13th to the 19th century, many with period gardens, together with farm animals, woodland walks and a picturesque lake. Rescued from destruction, the buildings have been carefully dismantled, conserved and rebuilt to their original form and bring to life the homes, farmsteads and rural industries of the last 500 years. Wander through these exhibits at your leisure - a majestic timber framed farmhouse from Kent; a striking market hall from Hampshire; a Victorian school; a medieval shop; carpenters, plumbers and brickmakers workshops; barns; a granary and a tread wheel from the South Downs. Many of the interiors have been furnished, recreating the way the buildings were used by their owners centuries ago: seven historic gardens show the herbs, vegetables and flowers grown to meet the needs of rural households from medieval to Victorian times. See bread, pottage and sweetmeats being prepared in the working Tudor kitchen, you may even be invited to sample the results! Pause at the working water mill where stone ground flour is produced daily, experience a recreated Tudor farm, enjoy a picnic by the millpond or a walk in the woods. Delight in the company of our rare and traditional breeds of farm livestock - working horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. See traditional farming in action and heavy horses at work. Demonstrators regularly show their skills and everyone you meet will be happy to talk about how people lived and worked. Discover the skills of the early carpenters, find out about traditional building techniques and learn how we help to conserve rural crafts. Hens peck in the straw, woolly faced sheep chew the downland grass and Shire horses work in the fields. Enjoy the rhythm of the traditional countryside and unspoilt landscape. For a complete contrast visit the Downland Gridshell, the Museum's workshop and store for supporting collections - in an amazing award-winning architectural tour de force, the first timber gridshell in Britain. (Tours daily at 1.30pm.) Children will enjoy the freedom to roam in safety and gain hands-on experience of the Museums buildings, gardens and animals. |

The Joust Christmas Gourmet Feast The Great Hall, Berkeley Castle. Thursday December 14th 2006 Celebrate Christmas in true noble mediaeval style this year at Berkeley Castle with the Joust Christmas Gourmet Feast. Taking place on Thursday December 14th in the spectacular setting of the Great Hall at Berkeley Castle, the Joust Christmas Gourmet Feast is a fully authentic mediaeval banquet fit for a King! Join master bowman and ace raconteur William of Berkeley, the feuding mediaeval Lord Berkeley and his arch enemy Lord Talbot, Joust jester Devil Stick Peat and the Mediaeval Fortune Tellers for a merry evening of mediaeval mayhem and a feast of the highest standards which caters for the traditional palate and also for those who have vowed not to eat meat. The Joust Christmas Gourmet Feast is an unprecedented opportunity to experience a mouth-watering, authentic gastronomic experience in the most sumptuous and unique of settings. With all the dishes cooked to original recipes using locally sourced ingredients, the Feast is prepared by one of the UK’s leading chefs - Rob Rees MBE. Rob is a consultant, demonstrator, food columnist, writer and chef and he is frequently featured locally and internationally promoting the UK and its food culture throughout the globe. Consulting for Rob on the Joust Christmas Gourmet Feasts is historical food expert Caroline Yeldham. The Museum was opened in 1982 with exhibits depicting 70
years of military aviation in Sussex, with special emphasis on the RAF
at Tangmere and the air war over southern England from 1939 to 1945. The
Museum has an intimate atmosphere lacking in many other museums of this
kind; perhaps this is due to the enthusiasm of the volunteers who run
the museum - many of whom were wartime RAF pilots, navigators and ground crew. The Museum is signposted from the A27, three miles east of Chichester, West Sussex, England. |

A 50 metre deep crater has become home to thousands of important and beautiful plants. Three of the world's climate zones ("Biomes") have been chosen for interpretation: The Humid Tropics (Rainforests and Oceanic Islands) and The Warm Temperate regions (the Mediterranean, South Africa & California) are contained within the two giant conservatories that have already captured the public imagination. The third, or "Roofless Biome", is our own Temperate zone that thrives on the climatic advantages that Cornwall has to offer. Here, a fabulous range of plants from the India to Chile rub shoulders with the much loved native flora of Cornwall, the Atlantic rainforests, and many of the more familiar crops that have shaped our lives.
