Lunar lunacy is the new term for the senseless behaviour of any dealer or manufacturer of motorhomes and caravans.  It doesn't matter if they are not Lunar connected.
We bought a Lunar Pinnacle Motorhome in July, have written letters soon after and since, to be ignored.
The whole story can be found at:

www.motorhomemike.org.uk
Just put that in the top browser and not Google.
Thanks

Hello.
Has anyone ever evaluated the possible MPG/air flow efficiency differences between what I call 'smooth' shapes and 'lumpy' shapes the later having the lump above the cab and the smooth has the body shape following the line of the windscreen back if you know what I mean!
I look forward to your comments.

Hi.
There must be a few people out there who are finding it hard to get a Swift Kon Tiki turbo exhaust, I got one recently from CES [UK] Ltd Chester CH1 4NS. www.cesuk.com   it is in fact from a Citroen C25 turbo and the rear pipe has to be cut off and remade to go through the chassis,  I found a chrome leg from a breakfast bar and this was used it took just a couple of hours to make and looks very smart [I am a welder but any good mechanic should be able to do it] the cost was £181.50 pounds inc. next day delivery.  I have the numbers from the exhaust if anyone wants them they may be able to get one local to them,

I have purchased in April 2007 a Fiat Based Motorhome. Which has a 2.3 litre engine 130 BHP type X250. Whenever I reverse up the slightest hill the engine and Gearbox judder Violently, I have spoken to Fiat Italy and Fiat Customer Relations, and have several letters by return, a standard letter saying that 1300 Rpm in reverse gear reduces the Judder. I have tried this, but this makes the clutch burn. Fiat fail to admit there is a problem, but I am told by other owners that their Gearboxes have had to be replaced, and the problem is still there.

Hi Ken,
I have come across your website today and found it fascinating.  I am new to motorhomes and have agreed to purchase a 1988 Fiat Ducato Autoquest 270.  I have two small children and It has no rear belts.  The dealer says he can put in two sets of lap belts but it would be too difficult [due to the structure of the vehicle] to put in three point belts.  I am not happy with lap belts only [spinal/abdominal injuries] can someone suggest a solution?  Is there someone in the South East/Kent/London who could do this work or is the dealer right and it is not possible to fit three point belts to a vehicle of this age?
Thanks very much for your help.

Hello,
I would like to find headlamps for a Fiat Ducato 1993. I need both left and right (no need to be complicated with far sides, on sides, cuddly sides,....). I understand that those for a Peugeot J5 of the same vintage would fit (maybe identical). I would be grateful for any advice.

Hello out there,
TRAVELLING THROUGH SPAIN FROM BILBAO TO VALENCIA
After the death of our son Tom last year, we purchased a motorhome, something that Tom kept encouraging us to do when he was alive. He was only 21 when he died of an Aneurysm of the Brain.  We have booked a ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Bilbao for the 12th December as we cannot now bear Xmas at home.
Has anybody got any good sites to stay on whilst we are travelling across Spain.  This is all very daunting for us as we have not done this before and any tips of help would be of enormous help to us.  Hopefully this trip will help us and we could then do it every year, but we are unsure about anything at the present.

Hello,
I live in Belgium, Europa and have a Toyota Winnebago. I’m having problems to get it immatriculated because of the weight of the car. It weighs ‘dry’, without passengers or even filling the clean water tank 2630 kg. The max weight of the car that is allowed, is shown on a sticker of Winnebago in the steering cabin, and shows 2722 kg. So I can only get 92 kg of weight in the car, not even enough for the driver (it’s needed to have 100 kg of weight per person that is transported) ; you see that I find it very weird that the car is immatriculated before (as it is a car of 1993) , and weighs to much to get it on the road ! Everything inside the motorhome, is stock Winnebago.
Does anyone have a hint/clue what I can be the problem ?
Thanks,
Kim

Hi,
Someone out there may be able to help me!  I have recently bought a 1996 Swift Kon Tiki 6 berth. Have a vague idea what everything does onboard.  But ,where the power management system is involved I haven't a clue....Don't know what the switches operate???   As usual with most second hand vehicles the owners manual has been long lost.  I could chance my arm and" wing it" with the operating systems, but that may result in a costly mistake, boiler burnout, failure to charge the leisure battery, or electric shock.  Does anyone out there have a spare or copy for sale????.
Thanking u!!!!!

Hi ,
I have a problem. I own a Toyota Sunland Express.  I believe it is 23" in length and has a 4cylinder engine in it.  The mileage is around 73,000 and it runs and looks great.  The interior is like new and I added a 1350 btu a/c unit as soon as I bought it the week before labor day in 2003.  Two weeks later we had a 10" retractable awning installed.  The a/c was also professionally installed.  We only used it five times as we just don't have the time so we put it in a camp grounds for the summer, close to home so we could enjoy it.  Unfortunately before we even spent one night in it it was destroyed in a flood.  The insurance company says it is only worth $4,900.00.  I have to prove that the motor home would bring more on the open market. Please can anyone tell me where i can get documentation as to what these units are actually being sold for out here in the real world.  Classified ads with prices they say will do the trick .  If pics are included that would help.
Thanks.

Can anyone help?  We have just bought an H Reg., 2 litre petrol AutoHomes Highwayman.  Every thing is fine except for the horrendous smells when driven. We think this may be coming from the waste water tank, but we can not locate any drain tap, despite the handbook saying it is located on the nearside rear end.  There is a pipe coming out of vehicle near sink but nothing comes out so it must be going somewhere.
Can anyone advise?

Dear Sirs,
We are the Harpenden Explorer Scout Unit and do not have a motor home.  What we do have which your members may be intested in however is a Talbot Express minibus which we will be disposing of shortly due to a failed MOT and as these vehicles are pretty rare we were wondering if ours would be of interest for use as a spare parts supply.  We will not be breaking it up - it will go as the whole vehicle.
Details of our bus:
Make: Talbot
Model: Express 1000 D
Engine: Diesel
First registered: 11/3/1993
Seats: 15 including driver
New windscreen fitted in March 2006
It failed its MOT 31/5/06 on the following points:
  1. Rear fog lamp not working
  2. Horn does not function
  3. Offside rear light cracked/broken
  4. Offside rear leaf spring fractured
  5. Exhaust system - part of it has excessively deteriorated
  6. Nearside front brake pipe excessively corroded
If you are interested please feel free to give me a call on 01582 624181.

Hi all,
I am doing some research on both older campers and smaller micro/mini campers and need to try and get hold of brochures or scanned copies of brochures. On the older side, things like older Hiaces, Marina Suntor, Bedford HA, Ford Escort camper, all VW T25, T1 & T2, Sherpa panel van, (not Coachbuilts) on the newer vans its the micro type, JC Leisure, Wheelhome, Drivelodge, Daihatsu's, Honda's, Suzuki, Bedford's, even Seat Terra. Scanned brochures would be fine, or photo copies (I would pay for copies and postage ETC) also for some of the older vans I will purchase original brochures. Anything considered.

I have a classic Autosleeper VW LT28, made in 1980.  Apparently they only made 700 of these. Mine has a genuine 48,000 miles from new, was Ziebart rust proofed when new, and is in lovely condition except that some twat has roller painted the exterior.  I want to get it resprayed but of course it needs a large oven, bigger than your average car sprayer.  I am in the North West.
Does anyone know of any spray shops that could take this van?

Hi,
We are hoping for some advice before we go and receive a hefty bill from the garage!  Any suggestions from anyone (or if anyone else has had these problems with the Mercedes Vito Reimo) we would be very grateful to hear.  We purchased our Mercedes Vito Reimo earlier this year which only had 11K on the clock and was very good condition.  However to our utmost dismay after leaving the van standing on the private drive where we keep it when not in use we have found the inside very damp and cannot as yet ascertain where the leaks are coming from.  The carpets are soaking wet and mildew everywhere. Also where the wood (chipboard) has got wet this has become all swollen.

We are a homesick expat Brum and me, his Kiwi wife.  Been back here in NZ for 24 years (last holiday in UK 1990) and next year we are coming back for 6 weeks.  We operate a small 2 & 3 berth campervan rental company in NZ and would be quite happy to swap one of ours for a similar size one in the UK for 6 weeks in June - July next year for us and anytime at this stage, for the NZ part of the swap.  Ours are 1996 models very well maintained, Toyota and Mazda hi tops.  Standard factory conversions, well equipped right down to the bedding and towels.  Also as a company we offer 24 hour roadside assistance and free Auckland or Christchurch airport pickup.  If someone is thinking of coming to NZ for a holiday and concerned over the cost of hiring but can do a swap we're in business.  Our website if you are interested in looking at our vans is http://www.affordable-campervan.co.nz

Greetings.
Bought our first motorhome this year - a Talbot Express Highwayman 1988 2.0L petrol, really enjoyable, hope to upgrade in a year or two. Not sure where to try for vehicle spares - Fiat or Peugeot dealers ?.
Particularly need to reduce the excessive gear lever movement ( hits the dash going into 3rd ). I understand its a common problem. I have also seen a reference to 'Defin' gear linkage - is this a 3rd party mod?.
I would appreciate any info.

Many thanks for you response Ken.
I have subsequently traced the gear linkage mod manufacturer by persevering with the phone numbers previously published in "Letters".
The firm Delfin Designs have recently moved premises ( Mid August '05 ) Now; Delfin Designs Spettisbury Abbey Farm Tarrant Crawford Blandford Dorset.
Their new 'phone No. available shortly will be 01258 857474.
I have been quoted £200. Plus fitting £45 - there are apparently various specs and settings so it seems worth the extra.
I have arranged to have this carried out soon.
Thanks again,

Hi.
Many years ago someone looking for a cheap campervan would go down to London's South bank, close to what is now the Tate Modern, where foreign travelers wishing to return home would sell there vans often complete with knives forks and half a box of Cornflakes. My question is does this still go on anywhere?

In response to Sam Philips' query - I bought a VW camper like that for £20. There was a row of camper vans parked, I believe, somewhere near New Zealand House, being sold by young travellers due to fly home.  I drove it from there all the way to Scotland, and yes there were cornflakes and ketchup thrown in. But it was in 1977 and I don't know if it still goes on. Perhaps New Zealand or Australia House would know?

Fiat Ducato 14 Compass Drifter 404 was this morning stolen in broad daylight at approx 11 to 11.30 from our front drive!!  It was dragged forward until they had enough room to break in to front cab and then towed away.  No neighbours saw or heard anything but it was spotted by a friend (who didn't realise it was mine until later), being towed along the A10 , so be aware all.  I've owned my Motorhome for eight great years and always left it secure and alarmed plus with immobiliser.  If any sightings please ring police registration number is J241 FMV

Please someone help.
I like my Ducato 2.8 turbo diesel leisure vehicle but for the rubbish gearbox, notchy 1st, 3rd. gear, plus a replacement 5th gear last year!  Seems ok provided you change very slow and careful.  Told this is a common problem, and a recon.box will just give same trouble eventually.  New box is £2,000.00ish.  Must be some answer surely.  Could a different box be fitted?  Is this possible?  Can't believe that everyone is stuck with this. Is there someone in the South of England preferably around the Oxford area.  I really wish I could get this sorted, it's depressing.  If anyone has advice or a solution please get in touch either by  e-mail or

G'day Gang,
Stop what you are doing!! sell your van, get out of the toxic cloud up north and head for Australia, you will not believe how blue the sky is down under. I am willing to forward information to anyone, the information that the travel agents don't know or don't tell you!! . After travelling in Europe I have found you get a heap more "Bang for your buck" in OZ.

We live in Alberta, Canada and have a 32 ft Class A motorhome which we use extensively. I was wondering if you know of a forum where people like us can arrange a motorhome ‘swap’. A motor home owner from (new Zealand, England, Australia or whatever) who wanted to visit Canada and use our motorhome, would reciprocate and give us equal time opportunity to visit their country and use their motor home. Maybe our future trip destinations would change depending on where we could arrange a swap.
I believe this sort of thing is done quite frequently with homes and it seems quite sensible to do the same thing with portable homes.
Do you know of a forum where this idea has been raised or is in operation???

We are considering buying a motorhome initially to travel around Europe for 8-10 weeks then more trips in the UK and abroad, I have visited a few dealers and been to a few shows. At the G-Mex show today I saw the Knaus range and was very impressed, does anyone have any advice, can I buy cheaper in Germany? Would it be better to hire in UK or Germany? Any advise on what to consider buying would be appreciated, its just for the two of us!

Hi.
Last April I sold my Type 24 VW Holdsworth Villa.  I owned it for 8 years and it was a good friend, (happy days)  Since then I have been looking for a good T4. At last I have found one and it looks great.  It's an AutoSleeper Trident, 4 berth high top, but its a 2litre petrol, I wanted a diesel, but  you cant have everything.  I am going for a test drive next weekend.  Are there any problems I should look out for and what fuel consumption should I expect, and any other tips.?
All the best to all van owners out there.

Hello Westie Owners,
We wonder if there is anyone in the UK who would be interested in lending us their VW Westphalia for 4 - 6 weeks?  In return, we will lend you ours whenever it suits you, for a similar period of time.  We live near Vancouver, BC, Canada.  We bought our 1983 Westie in the spring of this year, and love it.  This is what triggered the idea of travelling by Westie between friends and family during our upcoming visit to the UK, planned for May/June 2005.  We are a couple of ex-pats, semi-retired, who would treat your Westie with a lot of respect.
Please contact us if you're interested in the idea, so we can discuss details. Our email address is images at telus.net

Hi
We have a 16 foot Dodge Motor Home; V-8 engine, 6 foot double bed, water, furnace, toilet, air conditioned-great for 2 persons and very comfortable on the road. Handles well and small enough to zip around in the city. Currently we are based in the center of the Great Lakes Recreational area in Traverse City, Michigan, USA- the upper part of the lower peninsula of Michigan. This is a huge water area  of lakes and forests and small and large towns, beautiful camping parks, friendly folks, plenty of natural beauty with all of the land and water activities readily available. Spring, summer and fall are the best and the climate is invigoratingly mild. Nearby are Canadian cities of Windsor, London, Niagara falls,  Sault  St.Marie, and Toronto and US cities of Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo.  We are interested in exchanging use of our motor home for a small apartment or sleeping room in London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Venice, Sicily or Mexico. Exchange need not be concurrent. We have many photos to e-mail, some showing camping on our other "waterland" on the beautiful sea shore in Nova Scotia, Canada. Very interested to chat with you and hear your ideas and future plans and dreams.

Would be very pleased if anyone could help us.

Hi,
I am contacting you from Ireland. I have a question regarding gas cylinders and hope you can help me.  I own German import camper van which uses the German type gas cylinders and connection. I travelled on extended visits to England, France and Spain last year and all three countries had different systems! This made it impossible to stay for any extended period. I plan to travel to France and Italy again for a 6 month visit shortly. Is there any way I can get a connection that is standard for any of the countries. (I have heard of people using Camping Gaz, but the largest cylinder I can find is 2.75kg) If not can you advise me of the connection required for Italy as my gas bottles should last until then. The system uses Propane.  Very grateful for any help and I do not mind if you publish on magazine.

Dear Sir
Perhaps you maybe able to advise me and at the same time make your readers aware of the following problem:
I have a Swift Kontiki  650 2.5 turbo 1993 and the exhaust needs to be replaced. Swift and not one of their dealers can assist me. Swift sent me a list of a couple of hundred dealers and on checking around my area no luck.
Exhaust fitters again no luck. It is now with my garage and he has informed me that he cannot obtain one and would only suggest that I get one especially made for it (cost?).
My information, as far as I can find out is correct. In that Swift obtained some commercial bodies and because of the floor layout, had exhausts made for them. Naturally they are not off the shelf. That is OK for them but what about owners?
Yesterday, I saw in a garage forecourt a Kontiki 640, the same year as mine. I inspected this one and saw that it has exactly the same problem, the owner is going to ring me later.
I hope you can assist me, because mine is due for a MOT at the end of this month.
Yours sincerely

Hello,
We have just bought a Swift Motorhome and think the waste water drain off tap is the daftest thing about it.  If the tank is full you have to get laid down at the side take the pipe of the clip and then turn the tap.  I am trying to work out a way of making the outlet pipe go onto a proper brass tap fixed on to the chassis and the turning part of the tap coming up through a small hole into the floor space between the fridge and cooker.  This would make an easy job of emptying the tank from inside the van.  Has anyone done this already?  I would be pleased to here from them.

I'm planning to take an American RV to Spain.
My sister will join me in touring there; and her 4 dogs, two of which I claim joint ownership of - the other two just about tolerate me! However, I'm concerned that these boisterous and noisy friends will not be welcome on 'formal' sites, despite precautions such as tethered leads and even temporary fences (that may reinforce the Spanish Terriers' sense of territorial ownership and be counter productive!). Has anyone had experience of sharing an RV with four legged friends? Do sites accept dogs? They are chipped, etc, and inoculated.
I really wouldn't want to tour without them, think of all those gorgeous new smells and experiences we can share! Any doggy - RV experiences would give me a good insight into feasibility.......

Worth knowing, and they are listed in the 'Insurance' section of our  'Suppliers' page, along with lots of others.  Click the following link to check out all the rest. http://www.motorhoming.com/suppliers.htm#Motorhome%20and%20Motor%20Caravan%20Insurance    However I am sure there must be more.

AUS –
UK  Looking for a CAMPERVAN SWAP!!

We are a semi-retired couple in our late 50’s from Adelaide, South Australia who will be visiting UK from May 21st 2004 – sometime in August 2004. We are experienced campervan  grey nomads, looking to swap campervans either simultaneously or if you wish to travel to OZ at some other time, we could work out some other dates.
Our van is a 1990 Toyota Hi -Ace, LWB, Hi-top. The height of vehicle is 2.4 metres & approx 5.4m in length. It’s  a 5 speed manual, air conditioned, with 2.4 litre petrol engine. It has microwave, sink, fresh water tank, 2-burner cooker & grill, fridge, dual batteries & TV. 12/240v. electrics. Rear benches (storage space underneath) & table that converts to queen-size bed. Roof area could be used to sleep 2 small children but we use it as storage space.
There is also another cupboard & drop down door to use as small work top. When side sliding door is open there is another drop down table for outside eating. Fly screens for side & rear doors. Rear & front bullbar, tow bar, stone guard for windscreen. Opening roof vent for extra ventilation. Portable cooling fan & sep heater that runs off 240v.
We can help with any extra camping equip. needed.
Vehicle is in excellent condition as our hobby is vintage cars, particularly Austin 7’s which we restore.
We only wish to travel in U.K., not take a van on to Europe.
Looking forward to hearing from any UK adventurers with a campervan of similar size to ours.

I wonder if you could help answer some questions I am a single person I work 5 days a week I am reasonably fit and in good health I am looking for some answers regarding living in a motor home:
1. The possibility for a person to live in a motorhome on a permanent basis?
2. Reasons for not to live in a motor home excluding breakdown and lack of gas?
3. Reasons to live in a motorhome?
These are just general questions and just making enquiries about the feasibility of living in one all year round. I look forward to any responses.
Regards.

Hi,
I have just become the owner of a 1988 Fiat Ducato Highwayman, 2ltr petrol engine, and I wondered where I could get a owners workshop manual, and the price of one.  Any help would be appreciated. It is my first motorhome and am a complete novice.

Hi,
I'm trying to locate a company such as Bilbo's who carry out and sell VW Campervan conversions on new or second hand base vehicles - but who are based within reasonably easy range of

Dear Anyone,
I know nothing about them but have been advised that VW air-cooled vans are good for reliability. Therefore I'm keen to get hold of one between £3.000 - £5,000  - 4 berth . The most important thing is that it runs and has the basics for sleeping. Are there diesel versions? Can anyone advise me on where to get hold of one? I'm in the
Midlands. Thankful for any help,
Yours Barbara

Sorry to inconvenience you, but do you know where I may be able to obtain a workshop manual , or any plans or diagrams  to the hose connections for a LeSharo. The previous owner has cut the hoses to the motor and under the dinette/bed and has looped the flow and return pipes underneath the engine. We have no idea where they should be connected. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am looking to purchase a small camper van and have been advised that van conversions are best.  However, finances mean I can only afford a used van worth a couple of thousand!  If such things exist, could you let me know the best place to look at within my area. I live in Falmouth, Cornwall and am aware of Halls in Helston and Caravan World I believe in Scorrier?  I look forward to any replies with thanks.

Hey Ken
I am a trader who works the festivals in the summer. I have 4 children and I am P****d off to say the least, with putting tents up late at night or sleeping in my 4x4. It is time to look for a motorhome. Our friends have a Mercedes 809 conversion and although a bit small inside (for 6 of us) we could cope with it.  We are looking for a van conversion or a coachbuilt that is a 4 berth plus however the downside is that we only have £6000 max (yes yes I know we have a hope in hell's chance). Any Ideas?
Thanks

Hello,
I have just found your site.  We use our motorhome every weekend, all year round I thought I would tell you that if anyone is interested in line dancing then we would be pleased to see them at one of our meetings. The club is called Highpeak CWC, and we meet at the Waterloo pub Taddington on the A 6 near Buxton Derbyshire, or the social club at Sterndale Moor on the A515 Ashbourne road near Buxton. For details please phone John on
01298 78648. There is no charge for camping if you are going to the club for the line dancing.  Please note that children under 8 years old are not allowed in the club, so if any motorhomers are looking for a free site pop on down.
See you all

Thanks to Ian, below, for the plug for my website! Here is yet another mention which I hope will be of interest to some.
We shipped our Hymer B584 from
Southampton to Jacksonville, Florida in March and then travelled coast-to-coast and return, shipping back from Newark, New Jersey - six months - 12,000 miles - quite an adventure! Contemplation of such a trip might seem somewhat daunting - but it worked out incredibly well.  If you are interested in some detail then check out my website www.keyhambooks.co.uk

Ken,
I  was recently told a tale that sort of explains the law;  A chap turns up to watch a football (or whatever) match at the local park. There are signs saying "No Parking on the Grass" but a person parks there anyway. The Park-Keeper phones the Police to get the person moved, now if the person agrees that he is just parked, the Police can move him, BUT, if he says he thinks he might stay the night, i.e. if he is perhaps a NAV (New Age Vagrant), the Police have no power to move him until they get papers from a court.  This is exactly as it was relayed to me. Perhaps someone knows the law better than me, but this looks like the loop-hole the NAV's use.
Like your mag. Found it by accident - link from http://www.keyhambooks.freeserve.co.uk/ke00012.htm which I found sometime ago after searching for sites to do with Motorhomes, etc. http://www.keyhambooks.freeserve.co.uk/ke00012.htm is a site run by
David Berry which has some brilliant links, well worth a look for anyone with time to spare!
Keep up the good work,

Any Comments? Ed.

Hi Ken
I believe that the info about parking on the grass is flawed according to my understanding.  The grass is private property - the Police are not involved without a Court Order.  A car park that is open to the public (with or without payment), even a supermarket car park - is subject to the Road Traffic Acts - the Police can act.  On private property - more than 25 yards from the highway - the landowner can confiscate your vehicle.  The next to bottom line is - if its taxed the cops can trace you - if you have taxed the car from a fixed address - they've got you.  The bottom line is the Police only play by the rules in Narnia.

Hi
We have just come across your site by chance, and thought, what better way to air our grievances.  We live in Dorset and own a Hymer camp.  We have a lot of trouble down here with so called "New age travellers" who try to live full time on any area of free parking in any sort of ramshackle outfit, be it a caravan , motorhome, old bus or whatever.  Due to this most of the "Free" parking has been stopped by height barriers, locked gates, concrete posts that you can only get through with a small car etc.  We feel it is about time that we stood up and questioned this policy. We note that our local paper has started the ball rolling to stop overnight parking at the Studland chain ferry road.  Why should we be penalised because we have a larger vehicle than others? Surely the court of European human rights would say it was victimisation.  We would love to sell up...buy a big RV and live free of all things connected to bricks and mortar. We need to stay in the area for our business...
Has anyone any ideas?????

Seems like every respectable motorhomer and caravanners complaint, including mine.  Why should we suffer because of the actions of an irresponsible minority of MORONS?.  We have recently had a visit from a number of them at our local beauty spot where it took weeks to get rid of them and cost tens of thousands to clear up after they had gone.  The council had previously dug trenches and mounds but they still got in (If you or I did that we would soon be in court because we are traceable, responsible, and therefore easy to prosecute!!)).  Now that they are gone the council's only response is to dig deeper trenches and higher mounds, which punishes everyone, including law abiding motorhomers and caravanners.  It is about time we had a law that worked to punish the people responsible, who simply move to someone else's beauty spot and start all over again with impunity, instead of digging more trenches, more mounds and putting in height barriers, which punishes everybody.  The police seem to think it is too difficult to prosecute those concerned because they use the law against the police and move on, making it 'Too much trouble'  to follow up.  Let's have your responses and we will publish them all.  If we get enough we will see what we can do with them.  If you sit on the fence and don't complain, no one will know how you feel.  It only takes a few seconds so e-mail your opinion NOW by CLICKING HERE

Hi
I own an 87 vixen model #21TD. I found your web site while browsing the internet. It is for sale. However it is located in Louisville Ky. There would be the problem of the expense of transportation overseas. It depends on how interested the collector is . This is number 300 out of a total of 587 models made. It has a turbo diesel BMW engine that is new with approximately 20,000 miles. I'm attaching pictures along with a detailed description. It has a 2.4 litre, 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine(115hp at 4,800rpm) 5 speed manual overdrive transaxle, 4-wheel independent suspension, tilt wheel/cruise control, Dash air, power steering, Heart interface power converter, 110-volt power cord hook-up, automatic-operating roof that increases head room to 6ft. 6in. microwave oven,4 cubic ft. refrigerator, dinette seating for four, full size permanent bed in rear, custom bathroom with sink, toilet, shower. If you know of any interested buyers let me know. You may post this on your web site.

Hi Ken.
I would be grateful if you could delete my letter regarding buying motorhome from
Germany!  Pleased to tell you  that I purchased a Hymer 694 from a private buyer in Germany and am very pleased with it. I have saved about £6,000.00. on UK dealer price and got all the extras thrown in!!!!!  The advice from your readers was invaluable, so many thanks to them. I found the whole process easy to follow and everyone was very helpful. If anyone is on the lookout for good second-hand motorhomes this is the way to go, no VAT no customs unless under 6 months old or 6000kms.  A 2 day trip to buy using a cheap flight Ryanair etc.  Got ferry back £120. MOT and new plates in a week.  When I got home I found out headlights deflectors are acceptable.  Good site to browse--  www.mobile.de. (similar to our Autotrader..) Click on home and site should open in English/German, go to motorhomes, enter make and model, and good luck.  We are now looking forward to full timing early next year. Happy motorhoming,  stay safe all.

Since the death of my husband in February I have sold my Swift Kon-Tiki. I am now looking for a small camper. I should like it to be a diesel, with PAS and FSH. As my son will be second named driver, and following a works accident it will need to have a good laid back driving position for him, as well as a short upright one for me. I suspect an AutoSleeper might be OK, but it will depend on the base vehicle. If the mileage demands it I would want the engine belts to have been replaced. I am willing to spend around £8000. Does anyone have anything suitable for me?

Hi Ken,
I am currently a motorhome owner in South Africa and belong to MCSA (Motorhome Club of
S.A.) We are currently organising a trip to the UK for the British GP at Silverstone where we have family, but from there we have booked to fly to France to watch the last 5 days of Tour de France.  I have enquired locally with my travel agent who seems to think Ashton camper hire in Paris will be able to help us at approx. 160 euros per day. I wonder if you would be able to help us with any other options or info on other hire companies (not sure if UK companies would be an option) as well as camp sites and camp regulations from Bordeaux to Paris. We have never motorhomed in Europe before.
Hope you will be able to help us novices and it will not be too much trouble.

Hi Everyone,
Having obtained free return flights for a 4-day break at the end of September 2003 to Madrid my partner and I came up with this wonderful idea that to hire a Motorhome (all we needed was somewhere to sleep at leisure and shower) would give us the freedom of travelling with no time constraints and seeing a lot more of the the country instead of doing the "hotel holiday".  Having spent time on the web to try and hire a Motorhome from Madrid (airport) it would appear that "our idea" is a bit of a non-starter. Can anyone tell us whether it is possible to hire a motorhome in Madrid and whether it is a practical idea. All sensible suggestions welcome and appreciated.

Hi
Someone asked about secure storage near Basingstoke.  Have you considered putting your van on, say, a farm so that you can use your van as a weekend cottage?  Perhaps on the edge of a village, somewhere nice?  I've popped into the village pub in the past.  Asked around for a farmer who might be amenable.  Usually found one.  If not the next pub may find you somewhere.

Hello
Just found your site and thought that owners of older Motorhomes with no shower might like to know that the company I work for produces a portable shower. Basically its a pump up garden sprayer bottle with a shower rose head attached. You can put warm water in it but not hot. Ideal for washing off muddy dogs too.  The Model Number is 4140 and it currently retails at about £35  You can order over the phone by ringing 0844 292002

Hi
I've often considered buying an American RV but I've always been put off by the difficulties of storing them. There's no way I could keep it at or even near my house. So what do others do? Or does anyone know of a secure storage facility within easy travelling distance of Basingstoke?

Hi Doug
Thanks for your e-mail. UK Storage facilities for motorhomes exist in all sorts of guises. Open fields, walled and locked areas (some with security guards, and secure indoor storage (usually expensive). Prices can vary from 50p to several pounds a day. The major clubs such as the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club (details of these clubs and lots of others, are listed on my site) offer storage on some of their sites, but usually only for members. This is the good bit though: There is an Association of storage facility owners called 'The Caravan Storage Site Owners Association (CASSOA). Their address is: Second Floor, Minerva House, Spaniel Row, Nottingham, NG1 6EP Phone No. 0115 941 1022. They also have a website at www.cassoa.co.uk . I don't personally know of any sites near you in Basingstoke but if there are any I am sure they will know them. So no excuses now, not to buy that RV and sample freedom, particularly from all those roundabouts. I hope this information is of some help to you.
Hi Ken,
Please have a look to my Safariways Camperways Meeting Point http://members.fortunecity.de/safariways, sorry so far in German only. It contains a Galerie of Safariways and Camperways motorhomes.  I have created these pages to communicate with other owners of Safariways or Camperways motorhomes. Safariways is a Italian manufacturer which got bankrupt in 1992, the follow-up company Camperways got bankrupt in 1995 or so. A German Importer took about 120 motorhomes from the 1992 bankrupt to Germany. As far as I know he founded Camperways but was not successful.  Therefore it is quite difficult to get spare parts. I collected all Information and created the Treffpunkt (=Meeting Point). Its a dream of mine to include Italian pages since there are much more Motorhomes of those manufacturer. Please feel free to include information / links to your pages where appropriate. regards

Hi,
Can anybody advise what the correct tyre pressures are for an Autosleeper Ford Pollensa, 1999, running on Michelin 225 70 R15. Dealers say refer to the Ford handbook, but that does not specify a motorcaravan.
Cheers.

Hi Ken:
What a wonderful site and avenue for receiving information!  Thanks.  My boyfriend and I plan to tour Europe in a motorhome for  6 months to 1 yr.  Are we better off by purchasing a model such as Hymer then resell or shipping one from USA?  I understand there are size restrictions in areas and gasoline is more costly than diesel.  I welcome any and all advice.  Do American motorhomes sell well in Europe?  Whatever we do, the motorhome will be our sole source of transportation in addition to being our living quarters.  I'm so excited and want to make good decisions. Look forwarding to hearing comments and recommendations.  My e-mail address is:  sandy2000@www.com

If there is any of our readers who would be able to advise Sandy I am sure she would be glad to hear from you either direct to her e-mail address or via our site

Hi,
Finally, found your site and found many of the answers several hours of previous surfing had not!  Brilliant all round site for the beginner, tis me.  Anyway, liked the sound of the VW Camper Centre (history, location, prices, warranty etc) on your 'Dealers' Page and we will be visiting soon with hope to find a 'novice level' first VW van.  It needs to be used as only vehicle (aside my bike) for local travel, aside camping/travelling.  We like the look of the type 2 (I think is the right name?) and the elevating roofs, to wedge some kids etc.  Being over 6 foot I guess that is an essential requirement, but we don't personally like the look of the fixed high roofs.  So, and to the main point of this letter, does Ken and any other experienced VW owners wish to share the benefit of their wisdom/mistakes with us?  Any suggestions greatly received.
Finally, god bless the internet!  Thanks, happy travelling, I hope to also be waving soon!

Take care.

Hi Ken
What a great site!
I want to sell up, buy a motor home and travel Europe in 2 years (when the teens are both at uni). My enthusiasm has been quashed some what though as I have read several horror stories, especially about the robberies in southern Europe! As a woman travelling alone do people think it's safe?  Are there women out there who have travelled Europe alone and could give me some advice? I don't want my big adventure to come to nothing!
Best wishes,
Susan
PS I will be travelling Britain first to get some experience.
scoomb@aol.com
O.K.  There must be plenty of you experienced motorhomers and RVers out there with advice for Susan.
Hi,
Our dream has been to take early retirement, sell up and buy a motorhome and tour round the world.  We are planning this for Jan 2007. We are gathering any information that we can to help us on our way.  Although we have not owned a motorhome and have no experience, Steve, my husband has been in the army for 24years and has had to fend on next to nothing and was out in the gulf during the war.  We are looking to buy the Benimar Europe 6 berth motorhome for the big adventure but would like some advise as to what second hand motorhome to buy for the next four years to get plenty of experience in before we take off, and any other help ands advice would be much appreciated from experienced RV users.

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a Vixen RV Built by BMW in 1986.  It has full MOT, bodywork good, air suspension all works fine.  Five new Tyres.  Could you give me a rough price guide as I cannot find anymore for sale in the UK
Many Thanks
Andy Towell
Hi Andy
Thanks for your e-mail.  The Vixen you mention is a 1986 which is the first year they were built so it is an early one.  They are however very uncommon in the UK. According to the Vixen club , they only know of two in UK (One of which is featured on my Photo Gallery page under A Class).  That's not to say that there aren't any more.  Only about 500 were built, so obviously they are not all accounted for.  They appear to be extremely desirable, the one I saw at the Stratford show was surrounded by admirers.  What that means is that the one you want to buy is worth what you are prepared to pay for it, one, because of it's desirability, and two because there is very little to compare it with.  I am sorry I can't be of any more help, but you could try the Vixen Owners Club at  www.agencyrv.com/vixen.htm and speak to a guy called Bill Weir, who may be able to give you more information.  Certainly their website is worth a visit if you are seriously considering buying one.  I would be interested to know how you get on, so keep in touch.

Dear Sir
I'm sure I read not too long ago about some Bazillion/Mexican VW's being newly converted to the old  'Devon' style, any help please....

pl.galloway@ntlworld.com
Hi Mr/Mrs Galloway
Thanks for your e-mail, sorry it has taken so long to reply, but I now have the information you requested.  The old 1970's style VW is indeed now being made in Brazil and is called the Carat. The Carat is built in the Sao Paulo factory, and has rationalised the 'loaf' front and 'split' rear end that has been produced there for some years.  The engine selected is the 1600 multi-point fuel injected catalytic air-cooled motor as fitted to the Beetle, to satisfy the emission requirements for some years ahead. The Bus will have classic performance to go with its classic lines!   Being made for South America, they are left-hand drive, with the sliding door on the right. It is likely to be converted to right-hand drive for the UK market at extra cost, but not the sliding door side (a pity they aren't making a double sliding door model). I believe that Beetles UK do a good job of the Mexican RHD conversion. They are being imported into the UK in relatively small numbers.  The basic van costs around ten thousand pounds, although they can be bought converted to a campervan for around eighteen thousand pounds.  The conversion is done in this country by 'Devon Conversions' in Co. Durham after being imported by 'Beetles UK'.  The telephone number of 'Beetles UK', should you require more information, is 08701 202356.   I hope this information is what you want.

Hi Ken
We, that's Avril and me have an Elddis Eclipse, all our experiences can be seen at:  www.eclipsehistory.org.uk  This week we purchased an Autohomes Wanderer, Does any one out there have any experiences of this Motorhome.
Best Regards,
Brian.
I have just found your website and find it very interesting and informative.
In your archive I read your articles about travel in Europe, and of the benefit of having a Camping Carnet.  Can you give me any information about where to get one in the UK?
Many thanks
David Splitt
mail@splitt.freeserve.co.uk
Hi David
Thanks for your e-mail.  Camping carnets are available from the AA, the RAC and most of the other major motoring organisations when you take out your travel insurance.  For example Green Flag European travel insurance protects your health, your luggage and also covers you for cancellations or extra accommodation costs. It also qualifies you for a FREE camping carnet.  Try visiting their website at http://www.greenflag-international.com/european_motoring/insurance/default.asp to find out more.  If you contact them don't forget to tell them you found them through www.motorhoming.com .  Good luck with your travel.
Dear Ken
The vehicle you spotted at Stratford is indeed a 'Vixen' RV and there are at least two in the UK (as I am presently negotiating the purchase of another example).  There would appear to have been in the region of 500 built and a well run owners association is still operating in the USA. The majority are fitted with rear mounted BMW 2.5l diesel engines giving an excellent fuel economy of between 25 and 30 mpg.  Further information regarding these vehicles can be found at www.agencyrv.com/vixen.htm .  If the owner C2 CUB has been in contact I would very much appreciate it if you will pass on my e-mail address as his experience of running a Vixen in the UK should be very enlightening.
Thanks,
Bill Weir

Hi
We are thinking of buying an American type RV but we have heard conflicting stories regarding the size that camp sites will accept and their drive ability on anything other than motorways or large roads.  We originally intended to get one of 30' plus as we are intending to live in it for up to a year. We would welcome any comments from experienced RV'ers.

Dear Sir
I am trying to gather as much information that I can about the Glendale Motorhome company with the intention of creating a web site. I would appreciate any pictures, stories, anecdotes etc anyone may have about Glendale vans.
Please send all information to :-Dave Larson :-

Ken,
We have already exchanged several e-mails with each other with ref. to selling our American motorhome, I was surfing, looking for dealers, when I just happened to come across your site, all I read was your little introduction about yourself before deciding to contact you, I did not read any further........ that is until now, I have read it all........ I am so impressed it's a wonderful idea Ken, well done, I just know that it will prove to be very popular.  Wonderful site.
Can I tell you a little about my husband and I? we took early retirement six years ago from our hard and many hours a day building business, we had already had a couple of American RVs and rallied most weekends with one of three clubs, but we had wanted to Winter in Spain for sometime, circumstances had changed,  so we then had the freedom to hit the road.
We sold our home and decided to become "old age travellers" for a few years  although we didn't want to move around that much because we had already done so much travelling in my previous life as a cabaret singer (perhaps more about that another time) our main plan was to join a crowd of our pals in Benidorm for the Winter which is what we did, and over the last six years we have made so many lovely new friends that return again and again to Benidorm. It really is home from home now and we are counting the weeks to our return.
We were without a home (bricks and mortar that is) for about two and a half years and probably would have gone on like that for another year or so but for the fact that a very old friend of ours who was new to motorhoming had joined us in Benidorm and after only a couple of months sadly had a heart attack and died, It was a terrible time, after taking care of our friend for a few days then putting her on a plane home, my husband and I drove our friends little camper back to UK and after the funeral flew back to Spain to our own RV.  I suddenly felt scared that God forbid, anything should happen to my husband Nev, how would I cope with not having a  home to go back to, and not only that, not legal to drive our motorhome (it's HGV)  So we decided it was time to buy a house again and become "normal"  Surprise surprise house prices had shot up, even in Wales, If we found somewhere we liked there was no room for our 34' motorhome or it was too expensive so as a retired builder and having previously built five houses for ourselves we thought we'd look for a plot of land and build again.....easy!  We eventually found a nice plot next to a little river out in the country and two years ago the hard slog began,  at that time my husband was 59 and I was 55.  We really had forgotten just how hard it is to do most of the work yourselves, I have mixed concrete moved and re-moved thousands of bricks, shovelled many tons of earth then hardcore then I found myself struggling to lift roof trusses with my husband then one of the horrible jobs putting up plasterboards on the walls and ceilings then even worse tile grouting then actually decorating the place, but we managed to complete the bungalow within six months and finished it last October.  We then collapsed for the Winter to recover, then when it finally stopped raining in April of this year we started again on all the outside work....garden... drive....boundary walls, patio....drive....paths  will it never end?  I'm shattered   poor me    but it looks so lovely it's been worth it , only another few weeks and everything will be finished .  We have now decided that we'd like to buy our friends place in Spain and hope to sell our Winnebago motorhome (see advert on Your site) Hope I haven't bored  you all with my saga but we have to admit, we are proud of our old selves.
bye for now
Yvonne and Nev
The point of this long letter is that if we can advise anyone on self build ( only joking),  Wintering in Spain or full timing in your motorhome we'll do our
best to help.

Hi
Great Site.  This is a conversion on a 1976 Mercedes Benz 309D Series bus.  Features queen sized bed, with storage under.  Fridge, TV, Microwave, Sink, water storage, bull bar etc.  Now being refurbished especially the dining area and repaint as colour is not that attractive.  New colours are a Mercedes white with silver grey markings.

Hi Warren,  Great to know that our humble site is visited from as far away as Australia (Paradise for motorhoming and so much more relaxed about it - unlike the UK.  Motorhomers are like lepers in some places over here, rest of Europe is not quite as bad though.  I hope you have a great time when it is completed.  Send us a picture when it's done.

Hello,
My name is Andrew.  I have a 1985 Ford Transit Motorhome (conversion) and wish to know of any organisations that would cover us for breakdowns whilst in Europe (particularly France, Portugal, Spain and Italy)

Hello,
My name is Kim.  Do you know of anyone in Spain who sells used static homes, unsited or do you have any suggestions I might try.  I can be e-mailed at

Hi Kim,  I am not aware of anyone out there who sells unsited statics, but I will try to find out and let you know.  In the meantime if any of our readers can help then e-mail Kim at the address above, or e-mail us at Motorhoming.com and we will forward the information on.
Hello,
We have created a link from our site to yours because we feel the content of

Dear Sir or Madam,
I would be grateful if you would consider adding my web site to your list of links.
www.5van.co.uk launched in Jan 2001 and lists small caravan sites with no more than 5 caravan pitches.  I have had a good response from visitors to the site and think that it will grow to become a popular source of information.  I will obviously be happy to add a link to your site from my own.

 Hi
Found you while looking for a dealer. Keep up the good work. Newcomer to web sites, never realised there were such dedicated people about! Thanks for a great deal of pleasure to an "Oldie" it will keep me amused for hours!
Tony Marshall [diantony@bigfoot.com]
Hi Ken,
Regarding leaded fuel used in 2000p (air-cooled) VW`s. its not because of valve seats which are already hardened but because of increased heat generated by unleaded which could crack the cylinder heads. This may apply to other VW`s.
Cheers, Cliff.

I've just read Cyril's letter (See Letter at end of this page - Ed)  and agree with everything he said. I'm 52, and bought an Autocruise Valentine last year, on taking early retirement. Having no previous experience of caravanning or motorcaravanning, my wife and I dived in the deep end, and haven't looked back! Since July 1999, we've had three month-long trips to Europe, covering France, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Italy, as well as numerous trips around Britain. It was heart-warming to see Cyril's enthusiasm and I just hope that I'm around at his age to carry on exploring the world in this way.

I've set up a site reviewing European Campsites and overnight stops, including photo's where available which you might be interested in.

Dear Sir
I took the leaflet that you gave me at Stratford show but did not intend to read it as I had picked up loads of leaflets which I seemed to want at the time but usually throw away later.  As the leaflet you gave me was pink (Yuk!!) it caught my eye and I quickly glanced at it.  When I noticed the Web Address I thought I would take a quick peek, expecting to find the same factual unimaginative stuff I find on most specialist sites.  I was most pleasantly surprised however at the interestingly different approach your site has.  Combining a monthly magazine with a reference book means that I can revisit your site regularly and hopefully find something new to interest me each time I do.  With a site so new you seem to be off to a flying start, lets hope you can keep it up.  I will be checking to see that you do. I actually found the 'Dealers' Section quite useful as I managed to find someone to repair my ageing van, which I am in the process of converting at the moment (not very well unfortunately, but at least it keeps me off the streets - literally!!)  Thanks for a site with great potential.  Keep up the good work
Yours Faithfully

Dear Sir
I have just found your site whilst surfing the web (not bad for a 79 year old)  and wonder if you would be able to put this letter on it for me.
I would like to encourage anyone thinking about motor caravanning who has any doubts at all to 'Go for it'.  I have been living full time in my Elddis Autoquest since it was new in 1992 and for ten years before that, starting off in a converted Bedford CF ambulance.  It has given me (and my wife, who sadly passed away in 1995) the means to see the world and meet more people than you would ever think possible.  I would not swap my way of life for the biggest house in the best area.  I will give up my way of life only when I am no longer able to look after myself (I'm 80 this year!), which may be sooner than I think.  I can sit in my Care Home with all the other old codgers with a secret smile on my face as I quietly remember all the places I have been.
Go on, Do it, You know you want to
Sincerely Yours
Cyril Bowers
